womens group

The Wednesday morning womens group are currently building their own website this can be seen at This URL.

alternative software

We are working on a project evaluating alternative software for general desktop use. This includes everything from operating systems to office productivity software. If you don't have, or cant afford, up to date commercial software, then get in touch and we'll get you started with alternative software. All we ask is that you write a report on your experiences so that others can benefit from your findings. Click HERE for more info.

Wi-Fi

We are embarking upon an experimental Long Range Wi-Fi project using antenna constructed by members. Initial tests will be over distances of 250M, 500M and 1.5 KM
We need materials for this project. Click HERE to see if you have any of these items that you can donate.

welcome

This temporary website is the new home of MERIT (HAEDDU), Merthyr Education and Re-training in Information Technology. We are a charity based, community ICT training centre. The site is intended to promote our new training facility based within the Gurnos Estate, and to showcase work done by members of the community, and of the core groups of trainees.

Members at workbench

The facility is aimed at offering free training and re-skilling to all members of the communities covered by the North Merthyr Tydfil Regeneration Partnership. We also accept applications from all members of staff, volunteers and members of Not For Profit organisations. The ethos is to offer technical ICT training to those people who could not otherwise have access to such facilities. Especially those of working age or who can directly, or indirectly be of benefit to those community members living within Merthyr County Borough and beyond.

training elements

We offer two types of training environment.

Drop in

Drop in sessions are non-structured, informal, open access, peer to peer learning. All members are welcome regardless of experience, there are no pre-requisites, members learn at their own pace and in areas that interest them. A facilitator is on hand to assist, give advice and offer other opportunities to broaden any particular area of interest raised. See the timetable for details.

Semi-structured

Our range of semi-structured courses follow a more traditional path and are intended as 'introductory' sessions leading into the drop in sessions. Alternatively these sessions can compliment the drop in, or stand alone with follow up learning taking place during an 'all aspects' session. Various topics are covered within the remit of ICT. The courses come with supplied study materials from simple course notes to software and further reading. Wherever possible fully practical worked examples are used to demonstrate the concepts.
Course dates, times and titles are listed on the courses page. This will be updated at regular intervals. If there is a need for a new course to be added, this will be done on the basis of three attendees as a minimum requirement. Anyone can request a course. Please use the contacts page to let get in touch.

NEW! OCN Photography

In association with the WEA, we are now able to offer OCN accredited courses in Photography. Each course covers basic and more advanced camera functions, image transfer, manipulation and presentation. Each course has a field day, and a studio day to help you get experience.
